Just Updated
We’ve recently re-reviewed all of our top luxury mattress picks to include more beds that are true luxury options. We’ve also expanded our Buying Guide and added more feedback from the testers in our lab. So you can rest easy that, if it’s on this list, we’ve personally tested it, slept on it, and stand by its recommendation.
Here at Sleepopolis, we recognize that many — if not most — sleepers are going to take budget into account when purchasing a new bed. At the same time, there are shoppers out there who may be looking to indulge in something that comes at a higher price point. That’s why we’ve put together this list of the best luxury mattresses — to give our readers some higher-end options with extra features that may not be present in the average bed. We made sure to include mattresses that excel in areas commonly associated with luxury mattresses, such as quality materials and construction, cooling, and pressure relief. You can read more about how we test these areas in our reviews for each product and the buying guide at the end of the article.
In terms of price, there’s no set dollar amount that constitutes a luxury mattress. But to give you a range, the mattresses on this list all cost close to $2,000 for a queen size before discounts, with several of them costing more than $3,000 and even $4,000. While we wouldn’t call any of these products cheap mattresses, we tried to accommodate a wide variety of budgets for luxury shoppers.

What We Look for In a Luxury Mattress
High-Quality Materials
The most important factor we consider when testing luxury mattresses is undoubtedly the quality of materials. After all, long-lasting and high-quality beds are what luxury shoppers pay extra for. That’s why we only included mattresses that scored at least a 4 out of 5 on materials and tested for the highest-quality materials in each bed in the list. You can read more about each bed’s materials and construction in its full review.
Longevity
We know it is important for you to find a long-lasting luxury mattress, and we want to help you find the best luxury mattress for you and your specific needs. Because of this, we tested out the materials and construction of each of these mattresses to be sure you are getting the highest quality luxury mattress that will last you as long as possible.
Mattress Warranty and Sleep Trial
If you’re going to spend the extra money on a luxury mattress, you want to make sure it lasts a long while. As such, every mattress we’ve tested in our lab and listed here have at least a 100-night trial period and 10-year warranty. In fact, the majority of our favorites boast a lifetime warranty, serving as a testament to the beds’ durability and the company’s confidence in its product.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Its bouncy and responsive feel means it’s great for combination sleepers
The Saatva’s reinforced edges give it some of the best edge support we’ve ever seen
Cons of the Saatva

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.
What our tester says:
“I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer

Expert Opinion
The Saatva stands out on this list for being an innerspring mattress, with most of its construction made up of two layers of coils. Not only does this result in a bouncy, responsive feel similar to what you’d find in a high-end hotel — it makes the bed incredibly cooling. Because the springs create more space in the mattress than memory foam, there’s plenty of room for air to flow through the bed and help the sleeper keep a low temperature. Despite the classic construction, though, this luxury mattress comes at a much more affordable price point than the other beds on this list. Before discounts, a queen size is just under $2,000, and after discounts, you can often find one for under $1,700. Also, the price includes free white glove delivery, meaning that Saatva will send someone to deliver your new mattress, set it up, and remove your old bed free of charge.
True to the innerspring construction, we felt very cooled down when we laid down on the Saatva. And when we tested out the mattress’s temperature with a thermal gun — which uses color-coded imaging to show how quickly a bed heats up — the temperature increased 11.9 degrees after we laid down on it for five minutes. For context, more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit indicates poor cooling capabilities, 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling. Saatva’s thermal-gun score, along with the airy build, points to the Saatva having exceptional cooling capabilities.
What our tester says: “I found that the Saatva made it very easy to shift my body and change sleeping positions compared to other mattresses. The mattress responded well to my movement, and I didn’t sink in too deep. I was able to turn over and switch from my back to my side to my stomach with ease. This tells me that the Saatva is going to be one of the best mattresses for sex, and a good fit for combination sleepers who switch between their back, stomach, and side during the night.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
What Customers Say
There are Saatva showrooms throughout the nation, and shoppers report incredibly positive experience with the customer service at these brick-and-mortar locations. Customers also love Saatva’s complimentary white glove delivery, and the fact that, unlike so many other online mattresses out there, it isn’t compressed or rolled up in a box. You can lie down on it as soon as it’s in your bedroom, with no off-gassing period.
Highlights of the Saatva Mattress
The Saatva is available in three different firmnesses, so we think there’s a fit for most sleepers. We tested out the Luxury Firm, which we found to be a good match for back sleepers. Side sleepers will likely be more comfortable on the Plush Soft and stomach sleepers should opt for the Firm model.
The springs make the Saatva highly responsive, which means that it’s one of the best mattresses for combination sleeping and sex.
The quality materials and thoughtful construction of this mattress should help it last longer than the average innerspring bed.
What to Keep In Mind About the Saatva Mattress
Even the softest model is going to give you a more on-top-of-the-bed feel, as opposed to a ton of deep sinkage and pressure relief. If you want something that will better conform to your body, you should look at our best memory foam mattresses.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Pros of the Helix Midnight Luxe

The Midnight Luxe should sleep fairly cool, thanks to its airflow-promoting coils and breathable Tencel cover.
The springs give the Helix Midnight Luxe a good deal of bounce and responsiveness that should make it easy for combination sleepers to change. positions
Cons of the Helix Midnight Luxe
The softness of this mattress isn’t going to be an ideal fit for stomach sleepers. They’ll need something more supportive to keep their hips elevated and in line with their shoulders. See our best mattresses for stomach sleepers for more options.

Helix has a line of six hybrid mattresses, each with a different level of firmness. The Midnight is one of their medium models. It has enough contouring for side sleepers, but should still be supportive enough for back sleepers, as long as they don’t mind a softer bed. Learn more in our video review.

Expert Opinion
As a brand, Helix is known for having an original line of six hybrid mattresses, each with a different level of firmness. They also have luxury versions of these beds, with added features such as zoned lumbar support for and a premium pillow top for better pressure relief. The most popular model in the luxury line is the Helix Midnight Luxe — a mattress designed to have a medium firmness. When lying down on it, we felt that it had a heavenly, cloud-like feel to it while still remaining supportive.
Many sleepers purchase a luxury mattress because of the added cushiness and pressure relief. We actually test the latter trait using something called a pressure map test. This involves spreading out a specialized mat across the mattress’s surface, which then uses thermal imaging to track the level of pressure on certain areas of the body. So far, we’ve only applied this test to the standard version of the Helix Midnight, and we found mostly blue or green on the pressure map, indicating that the bed provides lots of pressure relief for side sleeping and back sleeping. But because the Luxe version has a plusher comfort layer, we feel confident that this luxury mattress will provide even more relief than its standard counterpart, especially for back pain and shoulder pain.
What our tester says: “I like the Helix Midnight Luxe for back sleepers and side sleepers. The medium-soft to medium-firm feel should give these folks the right balance of comfort and support. Hot sleepers should also have no problem staying cool on the Helix Midnight Luxe due to its construction and multiple cooling features.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
What Customers Say
As of this writing, there are nearly 6,000 customer reviews of the Midnight Luxe on the Helix website, and the bed has an average rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars. While the luxury option seems to provide enough cooling for most shoppers, some of them recommend paying extra for an additional GlacioTex Cooling Cover.
Highlights of the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress
The zoned lumbar support should help keep your spine straight as you sleep on your side, as shown by the pressure map results. If you’re extra concerned about your alignment, check out our roundup of the best mattresses for back pain.
True to its branding, the mattress has a medium, balanced feel. We gave it a score of 6 out of 10 on our mattress firmness test, which is just a bit softer than the industry standard for medium firm. We recommend this firmness level for back sleepers and side sleepers.
This mattress tested well in edge support, responsiveness, and cooling. So, it should be a good option for couples.
What to Keep In Mind About the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress
It’s likely not firm or supportive enough for stomach sleepers, who need a bit more sturdiness because they put more pressure on a mattress than back sleepers and side sleepers. See our list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers for more options.

The DreamCloud Premier’s construction is a thoughtful, luxurious take on the company’s flagship mattress. It uses a hybrid of foam and coils to achieve a firmer feel that’s still pressure-relieving. We think many back sleepers and stomach sleepers should appreciate this mattress. With such versatility and many special features, the Premier is well-equipped to cater to couples. Expert Opinion
Side sleepers should look for two things that don’t necessarily pair well in luxury mattress construction: pressure relief and proper spinal alignment. You typically get better pressure relief from a softer mattress and better spinal alignment from a firmer mattress, so it can be hard to find the right balance. Although there’s no such thing as a universal mattress for side sleeping (every sleeper is different), the DreamCloud Premier comes pretty close. As an upgrade of the original DreamCloud, it adds some upscale features such as a Euro top stitched into the mattress’s construction. To be clear, both the DreamCloud and DreamCloud Premier are luxury hybrid mattresses, but the Premier is just a bit more upscale. While lying down, we got a considerable amount of relief from the bed’s top layers of soft foam, while still feeling properly supported by its coil base.
Side sleepers put most of their weight on their shoulders and hips, so we wanted to see how the DreamCloud Premier looked in these areas during our pressure map test. There was almost no pressure at the hips, with just a little bit more pressure at the shoulders. But the graphic was still mostly blue and green overall. If you’re a side sleeper who experiences shoulder pain, you may want to consider the new memory foam version of the DreamCloud Premier, which gave us a touch more pressure relief at the shoulders.
What our tester says: “This feels like a true luxury mattress. From the cashmere cover to the Euro top, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with this bed. I really like how this mattress combines sturdy support with cozy pressure relief — making it a great choice for back sleepers [and side sleepers].” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor
What Customers Say
With a little over 5,000 reviews on the DreamCloud website, the Premier currently has an average customer rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Many shoppers were pleasantly surprised at the high quality of this mattress, since it’s priced affordably. You can find a queen size for under $1,300 after discounts, making this one of the most affordable luxury options on the market. Regarding sleeping position, one user wrote, “I am a side and back sleeper, and it is firm and supportive in either position.”
Highlights of the DreamCloud Premier Mattress
Back sleepers should also be comfortable on the DreamCloud Premier. The luxury cashmere-blend cover and high-loft memory foam should provide them sufficient pressure relief for hip and shoulder pain.
This is one of the best mattresses for couples because it’s responsive for sex, yet still isolates motion well for when it’s time to sleep.
Combination sleepers should be able to easily switch sleeping positions on the DreamCloud Premier.
What to Keep In Mind About the DreamCloud Premier Mattress
Though it does have some cooling features, some sleepers have found that the DreamCloud Premier sleeps a little hot.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Expert Opinion
Luxury mattresses are all about the bells and whistles, with many of them featuring additional cooling features. The WinkBed is no exception. Even though it’s a hybrid, it has an extra-tall section of coils that give it the feel of an innerspring and leave plenty of room for airflow. There’s also a breathable Tencel cover and an infusion of gel in its pillow top. This is important, as pillow tops — comfortable as they are — can often result in a higher temperature because of their thickness. The gel infusion helps offset any extra heat. When we put the WinkBed through our thermal-gun test, the WinkBed heated up 10 degrees, indicating good cooling. When combining that with the mattress’s construction and how breezy we felt while lying down on it, we gave the WinkBed a cooling score of 4.5 out of 5.
We should also say that the WinkBed comes in several different firmness levels: Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer. We tested out the Luxury Firm and scored it a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. The Softer model will be a bit plusher, especially with the included pillow top. Overall, we found that the WinkBed had a supportive and bouncy feel.
What our tester says: “After five minutes of lying on the WinkBed, [its temperature] only increased by 7 degrees, which is a pretty good result. This indicates that the WinkBed offers good temperature regulation. That said, the moisture-wicking Tencel cover feels very breathable and airy when you rest on it.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
What Customers Say
There are currently 8,573 customer reviews in total on the WinkBed’s page, with an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. Most of these verified reviews are a perfect 5. Many customers specifically call out the ease of the delivery process and speedy customer service.
Highlights of the WinkBed Mattress
Thanks to the different firmness levels, there’s a WinkBed for every sleeping position. We recommend that side sleepers opt for the Softer model, back sleepers go for the Luxury Firm, and stomach sleepers choose the Firmer.
Combination sleepers should also be comfortable on the WinkBed because the springs make it so responsive. We had no trouble moving around and switching positions when testing out the mattress.
WinkBed also offers the WinkBed Plus — an extra-durable model designed for heavy sleepers over 250 pounds. However, it does cost a little bit extra.
What to Keep In Mind About the WinkBed Mattress
The WinkBed has high motion transfer, which means it might not be the best mattress for couples who wake easily from their partner’s movements.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Expert Opinion
With the Saatva Rx, Saatva set out to create a luxury mattress that caters to sleepers who experience chronic pain. With a construction that alternates between foam and coils with every layer, it offers an optimal blend of comfort and support that we think should be especially comfortable for folks experiencing back pain. We gave it a firmness rating of 6.5 out of 10 — the industry standard for medium firm, and an indicator that the bed should be supportive enough to keep the spine neutrally aligned while still offering pressure relief at the lumbar region.
As with all of our mattresses, we ran the Saatva Rx through our pressure map test. In all sleeping positions, the graphic was almost entirely blue at the back area. This means that there was almost no pressure buildup around the spine. This shows the mattress’s combination of memory foam, micro coils, and larger coils at the bottom is doing its job.
What our tester says: “The mattress offers a pleasant mix of comfort and support to create that balanced, medium-firm feel. While lying on the bed, I experienced plushness and cushioning from the quilted cover and upper foam layers, but felt firmly supported by the coils below.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
What Customers Say
The Saatva Rx is still a very new bed, and as such, only has 49 customer reviews on the Saatva website. But it has an overall customer rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars, with reviewers praising not only the mattress’s pain-relieving abilities, but the helpfulness of the customer service team. One commenter appreciated how the customer service rep told them how to get a higher discount on the bed, and pointed them toward the free white glove delivery.
Highlights of the Saatva Rx Mattress
Because of all the room created by the dual layer of coils, the Saatva Rx has a lot of airflow and sleeps very cool.
The Saatva Rx is that rare mattress that’s a good fit for all three sleeping positions, although we found it most comfortable while back sleeping.
Its coils give the Saatva Rx a decent amount of bounce and responsiveness — a plus for combination sleepers who need to switch sleeping positions.
What to Keep In Mind About the Saatva Rx Mattress
If you’re someone who feels the slow, sinking feeling of memory foam, then you probably won’t enjoy the Saatva Rx.

Expert Opinion
Luxury mattresses can offer several benefits for couples. First, they’re typically built with higher-quality materials, resulting in a more durable construction. This should prevent the bed from sagging underneath the weight of multiple sleepers (something that can throw the spine out of alignment over time). Second, they often have added cooling features that help cool down two bodies instead of just one. In the case of the Nolah Evolution, it’s built with a combination of support coils and AirFoamICE — a more breathable alternative to memory foam.
We of course also tested the Nolah Evolution for motion isolation and responsiveness, which are also important performance areas for couples. Good scores in each category mean the mattress is able to trap your partner’s movement at night while also allowing enough bounce for sex. Luckily, the Nolah Evolution tested well in both. Our motion isolation test showed little to no movement on the seismograph after dropping a 10-pound steel ball from three different heights. And while rolling around in different sleeping positions, we felt that the Nolah Evolution provided enough bounce to keep us lifted and help with ease of movement.
What our tester says: “I love how the Nolah Evolution comes in three different firmness models, so you can choose the best fit for you. For the Luxury Firm model, I really appreciate its medium-firm feel. This mattress provides good pressure relief and body contouring. It’s a great choice for side sleepers, and back sleepers who like a softer mattress.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor
What Customers Say
On Nolah’s website, the Evolution currently has an average customer rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars. Several folks point out how the zoned support of the coils helps keeps their spine neutrally aligned.
Highlights of the Nolah Evolution Mattress
This mattress is available in three different firmness levels: Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. That means there’s something here for each different sleeping position (we tested the Luxury Firm).
Side sleepers should find lots of pressure relief at the shoulders and hips on the Plush model. The mattress also comes with a soft pillow top that helps cradle these areas.
Stomach sleepers will likely be most comfortable on the Firm model, with back sleepers preferring the Luxury Firm model.
What to Keep In Mind About the Nolah Evolution Mattress
While it does include soft foams and a pillow top, this isn’t the mattress for those wanting a slow-sinking memory foam feel. The Nolah Evolution is a hybrid mattress after all, so it emphasizes support with coils at the base.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

“First and foremost, I’d recommend this mattress to hot sleepers. This bed sleeps nice and cool thanks to special phase change technology and gel infusions. The Aurora Luxe is also a nice pick for back sleepers. Expert Opinion
When it comes to luxurious features on a mattress, many sleepers look for a pillow top. Stitched onto the top of the bed, a pillow top provides an extra layer of immediate cushioning, along with a little bit of sinkage. On the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe, you can select between three different firmnesses and select the Cloud pillow top at checkout.
When thinking about sleeping position, we think back sleepers will be most comfortable. They should find their hips lifted and in a proper alignment. Also, our pressure map results indicate that the lower back should still receive the necessary pressure relief to prevent back pain.
What our tester says: “The pocketed coils bring a lot of support and heft to the structure, but the top layers of foam help set the tone here too. And that tone is one of a more balanced feel, achieving some pressure relief but also some sturdiness.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
What Customers Say
There are over 3,500 customer reviews of the Aurora Luxe on the Brooklyn Bedding website, with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. When searching the word “firm,” many reviews come up that praise the bed’s sturdiness while saying it doesn’t feel too hard.
Highlights of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Mattress
The Medium and Firm versions of this mattress should be an especially good fit for combination sleepers, who should be able to switch positions easily.
Side sleepers will likely be comfortable on the Soft model.
Being a luxury mattress, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature also has some cushy added features — namely a cover of phase change material that’s cool to the touch.
What to Keep In Mind About the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Mattress
Even on the Firm model, stomach sleepers may not be comfortable and might need something with more support. We recommend you take a look at the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

This mattress does a wonderful job at offering body contouring while still helping the sleeper stay elevated and lifted as well. The layers of foam should provide comfort while the coil system should offer lots of support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester

Expert Opinion
Hybrid mattresses combine soft foams and sturdy coils to strike a delicate balance of comfort and support. If you’re specifically in the market for a luxury hybrid, we’d like to point you to the Bear Elite Hybrid. As a brand, Bear designs beds with athletes and people with active lifestyles in mind, and the Elite Hybrid is the company’s most luxurious model. It has two layers of coils — one for foundational support and another for a reinforced perimeter, which creates extra-strong edge support. Other luxury touches include an infusion of copper in the memory foam layer (a plus for anyone cooling down after a long workout) and an optional cover made of a material called Celliant. Celliant is designed to absorb your body heat, then redirect it back to your body to assist with blood flow and muscle recovery. While we haven’t verified the scientific accuracy of this claim, you can read more about it in several clinical trials.
Another perk of the Bear Elite Hybrid is that it’s available in three different firmness levels: Soft, Medium, and Firm. This allow folks of different sleeping positions and body types to select the model that’s best for their wants and needs. When using the pressure map on the Medium model, we found excellent results (low pressure buildup) in the back-sleeping and side-sleeping positions. Stomach sleepers will almost certainly want the firmer model.
What our tester says: “As the brand’s luxury option, the Bear Elite Hybrid has a more complex construction than the other models, with five layers of advanced cooling and support technology to help sleepers get their best night’s rest. I’d recommend this mattress for most back and stomach sleepers.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
What Customers Say
On the Bear website, the Elite Hybrid currently has a little over 3,700 reviews and an average customer rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars. Many reviews call out the bed’s cooling abilities (a hallmark of hybrids due to their airflow-promoting coils). This isn’t exactly surprising, as the mattress received some impressive cooling results in our mattress lab.
Highlights of the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress
This mattress did well on our responsiveness test, so it should be a suitable choice for combination sleepers, who need mobility for switching sleeping positions.
Those with joint pain should appreciate the pressure relief on the Soft model.
We found some exceptional cooling results on the Elite Hybrid due to the copper infusion and presence of phase change material, which helps regulate the temperature of your body. There’s also an option to include the Celliant cover for a fee, which delivers a cool to the touch feel.
What to Keep In Mind About the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress
Stomach sleepers weighing over 250 pounds might be alright on the Firm model, but they might need a mattress intended specifically for larger bodies. For our favorite options, see our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy sleepers.
The Celliant cover that may help in muscle recovery and keeps things cool must be purchased separately for around $130.

Expert Opinion
If you love the feeling of a plush hotel bed, the Leesa Sapira Chill may be perfect for you. This mattress is packed with cooling technology, hence the “chill” part of the name. With a breathable cover, thick gel-infused foam, and coils that promote airflow, the Leesa Sapira Chill lets you relax into layers of comfort without overheating.
The Leesa Sapira Chill is offered in three firmness options: Plush, Medium-Firm, and Firm. If you’re looking for a soft luxury mattress, we recommend selecting the Plush option at checkout. Side sleepers should especially appreciate the body contouring this mattress provides.
What our tester says: “When I first laid down on the Leesa Sapira Chill, I immediately noticed its plush yet supportive feel where I felt I was sleeping “on” the bed rather than “in” it. It’s very responsive and has good bounce — thanks to the reinforced pocketed springs — so I felt comfortably lifted and had no trouble moving around and shifting positions.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor

Stearns & Foster is known for their luxurious, hotel-like beds, and the Lux Estate is a medium-firm option that should appeal to back sleepers and side sleepers alike. We should note that the pillow-top version comes in three different firmness levels. Back sleepers should be most comfortable on the PT Medium while side sleepers should opt for the PT Soft. Stomach sleepers will likely find a good fit on the PT Firm. Learn more in our Stearns & Foster Lux Estate video review.
What our tester says:
“If you’re looking for a mattress that screams luxury, this is definitely it. I love how plush it feels, and it definitely reminds me of those ultra-comfortable, hotel-grade mattresses. Also, it’s one of those rare unicorn mattresses that works well for almost all sleepers.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor
Expert Opinion
Many sleepers equate luxury with plushness, so it can be challenging for them to find a firm luxury mattress. But they might find what they’re looking for in the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate. The mattress gets more supportive toward the bottom, with an innerspring system at the foundation. Up top, however, there’s a memory foam pillow top that gave us some pressure relief right off the bat. It should prevent the joints from building up too much pressure. Note: This bed is available in several different firmness levels, and for this article, we’re naturally recommending the Pillow Top (PT) Firm.
Other luxury features of the Lux Estate mattress include a Tencel cover, which we found gave the bed a smooth, silky feel up top. This gave the mattress an extra level of elegance, and when testing it out, we sank in just the right amount for pressure relief at our back while still getting a slight lift from the springs below.

What Customers Say
On the Stearns & Foster website, the Lux Estate has a total of 733 verified reviews and an average user score of 4.4 out of 5 stars. Many of the reviews go into fairly articulate detail about the feel of the bed and its luxurious features. For instance, one user wrote “Right from the start, you notice that this is a well-built mattress. The covering has a luxurious feel that keeps you cool throughout the night. The edge support is great and doesn’t sink keeping you stable as you rise to a standing position.”
Pros of the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress
The different firmness options mean that there’s a model for every sleeping position. We think the PT Medium is the best for back sleepers, the PT Soft is best for side sleepers, and the PT Firm is the best for stomach sleepers.
The Lux Estate has a number of cooling features that help it keep a low temperature, including airflow-promoting coils, the Tencel cover, and gussets on the side for extra ventilation.
It has a 90-day trial period, giving you plenty of time to decide if the luxury price point is worth it.
Cons of the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress
This is another bed that is more supportive than contouring. If you’re after that memory foam feel, you may want to look at a softer all-foam option.

Tempur-Pedic is famous in the mattress world for creating deeply contouring and healing memory foam mattresses. Like many of the other beds in their collection, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt offers exceptional pressure relief due to its deeply contouring Tempur material. We recommend this mattress to side sleepers, couples, and anyone struggling with aches and pains. Check out our TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt video review to learn more.
What our tester says:
“I think the LuxeAdapt could be especially good for side sleepers who need deep pressure relief at their shoulders and hips. This sinkage only intensifies the harder your body presses in, which tells me you’re likely to feel way more “in” this bed than “on top” of it.” – Logan Block, former content director
Expert Opinion
Tempur-Pedic’s line of luxury foam mattresses has long been known for the brand’s proprietary TEMPUR-material — an extra-cushy version of memory foam that was actually developed for NASA in the 1960s. In the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt, there’s plenty of TEMPUR-material in both the comfort layer and contouring layer, creating a plush, ultra-contouring sleeping experience that cradles your body at its pressure points.
When we tested out the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt, we found it to be extremely soft. We rated it a 5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, which makes it the softest mattress on this list. It really did feel like the mattress was hugging us, the thick top layer of foam contouring our shoulders, hips, and lower back.
What our tester says: I think the LuxeAdapt could be especially good for side sleepers who need deep pressure relief at their shoulders and hips. This sinkage only intensifies the harder your body presses in, which tells me you’re likely to feel way more “in” this bed than “on top” of it. – Logan Block, former content director
What Customers Say
On the Tempur-Pedic website, the LuxeAdapt has almost 10,500 reviews and an average customer rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. When searching the term “memory foam,” many users point out how TEMPUR-material is much more contouring than traditional memory foam.
Pros of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Mattress
Side sleepers tend to benefit from a soft mattress that gives them significant contouring at the shoulders and hips — the areas of the body where they put the most pressure. We think they’ll be very comfortable on the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt.
Anyone with joint pain should get plenty of relief from the mattress’s soft foams.
Like many foam beds, the LuxeAdapt muffles your movement and keeps it from rippling across the mattress’s surface. This could make it a good option for couples, especially if one of you is a restless sleeper who tosses and turns at night.
Cons of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Mattress
The softness probably isn’t the best fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers, who tend to need more firmness and support than side sleepers.
The cuddly memory foam makes it a bit hard to switch positions in bed, which is something to keep in mind if you’re a combination sleeper.
Because of their price, luxury mattresses can and should offer more than just a standard mattress. But luxury mattress or not, our Sleepopolis team puts a variety of models through the same series of tests. Although we’ve briefly gone over some of them in the above mini reviews, let’s take a minute to describe them all in greater detail.
Pressure Relief
This test uses a pressure map, which uses body temperature to track how much pressure is building up in a given sleeping position. We test mattresses out in the three most common sleeping positions: side sleeping, back sleeping, and stomach sleeping. If a map shows mostly blue, that indicates low pressure; green indicates moderate pressure, and yellow, orange, and red indicate high pressure.
Above is a screenshot from the pressure map results on the Helix Midnight (standard version) while back and side sleeping. We see mostly blue for the back-sleeping position, so we can easily determine that most back sleepers should feel low pressure buildup in this postion.
The side-sleeping results require a bit more analysis. At the shoulder and hip, we see green and yellow, colors that indicate moderate pressure. Since there’s not a lot of yellow at the shoulder, most side sleepers should find comfort in this area. However, we can read that those with hip pain might have a difficult time getting enough pressure relief, as our map indicates a bit more buildup there.
Example of the graphics we see from our pressure map results. Above is a graphic from the standard Helix Midnight.
Edge Support
Nichole doing the yardstick test on the Plank Firm Luxe
Edge support refers to how strong the perimeter of a mattress is. When you sit on the edge of the bed or lie near it, do you feel it collapsing under your weight, or does it retain a sturdy foundation? If you’re someone who likes to spread out and utilize the entire sleep surface — or if you share your bed with a partner — you’ll want to look for a mattress with solid edge support.
The way we test edge support is fairly simple. We sit on the edge of the bed and see if we feel the layers collapsing under our weight. We then do the same thing while bending over and tying our shoes. If the mattress’s layers stay sturdy, then we know that the bed has strong edge support.
Motion Isolation
When we say “motion isolation,” we’re talking about how well a mattress is able to muffle the movements of the sleeper(s) and prevent them from rippling across the bed. We test this by dropping steel balls of various weights onto the mattress and measuring their vibrations across the sleep surface. The less movement we detect, the better a mattress is at isolating motion. If you share your bed with someone else and either one of you is a light sleeper, you’ll probably want a luxury mattress with good motion isolation. All-foam beds like the Nectar Premier Copper (shown below) tend to be better at this than hybrids, innerspring, or latex.
Seismograph results for the Nectar Premier Copper, showing minimal movement. This mattress should have some stellar motion isolation.
Temperature Regulation
If you’re a hot sleeper, you’re going to want to find a luxury mattress that sleeps cool. We talk about this factor in many of the above mini reviews, and if you want more info, you can click on our full reviews for a deep dive on each bed’s cooling capabilities. Or, you can see our guide for the best cooling mattresses.
In addition to considering a mattress’s construction and cooling features, we measure each one’s temperature with a thermal gun — a device that uses thermal imaging to show how much a mattress heats up after we lie down on it for five minutes. If it’s more than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, we consider it to have poor cooling capabilities. 10 to 15 degrees indicates decent cooling, 5 to 10 degrees indicates good cooling, and less than 5 degrees indicates excellent cooling.
Below, you can view the thermal gun results for the Saatva Rx.
We’d classify these results as “good” cooling. When combined with the mattress’s cooling technology and construction, we gave the Saatva Rx an overall cooling score of 4.5 out of 5.
Luxury Mattress Considerations
Any time you’re shopping for a new mattress — especially a luxury bed that you’re going to spend a good amount of money on — there are a lot of factors to consider. Here are some of the most important ones, and how they might affect your decision-making.
Price
Even though luxury mattresses tend to be more expensive, they still cover a wide range. For instance, the beds here cost anywhere from almost $2,000 to nearly $4,200 for a queen size before discounts. Decide what you can afford and what your hard price limit is.
What If a Luxury Mattress Is Out of My Price Range?
Not to worry. We recognize that a luxury mattress — even a discounted one — may not be in everyone’s budget. That’s why we’ve put together several other lists of less expensive (yet still high-quality) options. Check them out below.
Sleepopolis team testing mattresses in every sleeping position
Sleepopolis Firmness Scale
Sleeping positions and mattress firmness are crucial because they directly affect spinal alignment and overall comfort, ensuring that your body is properly supported throughout the night. A luxury mattress tailored to your sleeping style can enhance sleep quality, reduce pressure points, and promote better restorative sleep. When testing mattresses, we place each mattress on our firmness scale that ranges from 1-10, 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest bed we have tested. Our testers rotate through each sleeping position to determine how each bed will perform and support for each position. Here are out firmness recommendations for each sleeping position:
Side sleepers are generally most comfortable on a softer mattress ranging between 3-6 on our firmness scale so cradle their shoulders and hips.
Back sleepers often need a medium-firm or firm mattress to support their hips and lower back. This ranges between 6.5-8 on our firmness scale.
Stomach sleepers require a firm or extra-firm mattress to keep their hips elevated and spine aligned. This normally ranges between a 7-9 on our firmness scale.
If you’re a combination sleeper who switches sleeping positions, it’s going to depend on what level of firmness you prefer, although you’ll want to make sure the bed is responsive enough for you to easily move around so we recommend a 6.5 medium-firmness on our scale.
A luxury firm mattress typically refers to a level of support that combines premium materials, superior construction, and advanced technology to offer enhanced comfort and superior sleep. It is typically medium-firm to firm (6.5-7.5 on our firmness scale). These mattresses often feature unique designs, longer durability, and exclusive features, catering to consumers seeking a more elavated sleep experience.
Mattress Size
There’s no one right mattress size, but the bigger the bed is, the more expensive it’s going to be. We’re usually talking about queen mattresses when discussing price throughout this article, so keep that in mind if you need a different size and are trying to budget accordingly. A luxury mattress is already fairly expensive, and those numbers continue to go up when you get into king size mattress, california king, or alaskan king territory and beyond.
What Makes It a Luxury Mattress?
Luxury mattresses are more expensive for a reason. There are many factors that can drive up the manufacturing cost — and thus the eventual price — of a bed. The good news is, these increases usually result in increased quality and durability. Also, mattress brands often justify the higher price with non-financial perks such as longer warranties. Let’s take a look at some of these causes and benefits.
Materials: A mattress’s higher price and luxury status is mostly going to depend on materials. For instance, if you look at Helix Luxe — the luxury line of Helix’s original six mattresses — they each have an added pillow top and a cover made of soft and breathable Tencel. Of course, these items cost more money to produce, hence the higher price tag.
Shipping, Returns, Trials, and Warranty: One way companies can make luxury mattresses worth the price is by offering a more generous warranty and trial period. This gives the customer plenty of time to make sure they’re satisfied with their investment. Most companies also offer free shipping and returns, although that usually applies to all of their mattresses, not just luxury beds.
What determines a reasonable trial period and warranty?
On average, sleep trials last 100 nights so shoppers get plenty of time to determine if it’s the best bed for their needs. Warranties aren’t just protection for shoppers; they often reflect a company’s confidence in its product. We recommend finding a model with a warranty of at least 10 years.
Foundations, Bases, and Accessories: Even though luxury mattresses cost more, they’re often bundled with foundations, adjustable bases, and other accessories. This usually involves an extra charge, but it makes both the mattress and the additional items much less expensive than if you buy separately. You can read more about some of these products in our roundup of the best adjustable beds.
Old Mattress Removal: If you buy luxury, many brands won’t just deliver your new bed for free — they’ll also remove your previous mattress, saving you the trouble of having to get it out the door and onto the curb.
In-Home Assembly: If you order a luxury mattress, some brands will transport the bed into your bedroom and set it up for you at no extra charge. Another term for this is “white glove delivery.” Saatva is known for offering this service, partly because their luxury mattresses arrive uncompressed and not in a box.
Types of Luxury Mattresses
The type of mattress you sleep on has a direct effect on how you’ll feel the next day and whether or not you’ll wake up with aches. Choosing a luxury mattress with extra features can enhance your sleep experience on top of your preferred mattress type. Luckily, you can find luxury grade mattresses in all types listed below.
Take a Closer Look at the Different Mattress Materials
Memory Foam Mattresses
A memory foam mattress is a popular choice for many people, and as a material, it’s made many advances in recent years. Traditional memory foam beds have a tendency to trap body heat and create night sweats. But new technology — such as the environmentally friendly materials of the WinkBeds EcoCloud — has revolutionized the memory foam mattress and allowed it to sleep cool.
Innerspring Mattresses
A traditional innerspring mattress isn’t typically what comes to mind when we say luxurious. But when you have one like the Saatva HD with a plush pillow top, it’s hard to deny its luxury status. This type of mattress is best suited for heavy people who need a strong foundation that won’t sag or dip.
Latex Mattresses
Latex is becoming a more popular material in luxury mattresses. That’s because it creates a cleaner sleeping surface and is hypoallergenic, which sleepers with allergies should appreciate. Latex is a bit pricier than other mattresses, but it also does a great job contouring the natural curves of your body while distributing pressure and weight evenly for a luxury experience.
Hybrid Mattresses
There are a lot of hybrid mattresses out there, and most of them are usually paired with pocket coils and memory foam. Luxury hybrid mattresses tend to have many pocket coils, high-density poly foam, and a plush pillow top. The ones listed in this review perform well with a wide range of sleepers. When in doubt, go with a hybrid mattress like the Helix Midnight Luxe.

Luxury mattresses typically last between 10 to 15 years, depending on the materials used and how well they’re maintained. Regular care, such as rotating the mattress and using a protective cover, can help extend its lifespan. Look out for longer mattress warranties to help guaranty durability.
Quality Materials
As we said, the materials of a luxury mattress usually cost more because they’re more durable or increase a bed’s performance in areas such as cooling, motion isolation, edge support, and more.
Upgraded Customer Service
It isn’t just the mattress that gets an upgrade when you buy luxury; these beds often include additional customer-friendly policies such as free white glove delivery and old-mattress removal.
Cons of Luxury Mattresses
More Expensive
Let’s just state the obvious — a luxury mattress is probably going to cost you a lot more than a standard one, even though many of them (including the ones in this roundup) can be found at a steep discount or value price. If you’re going the luxury route, you just have to be prepared to spend more money.
Heavier Weight
Many luxury mattresses are taller, have more layers, and include sturdier materials, all of which can increase a bed’s weight. For example, DreamCloud mattresses tend to be fairly heavy — to the point where you might need a friend or family member to help set one up.

How We Chose These Mattresses

From there, we give every bed an overall score based on materials, comfort, support, cooling, and edge support. We also factor in brand performance with categories such as value and warranty.
When consumers hear the word “luxury,” they have a certain expectation when it comes to materials. That’s why we picked beds that scored especially high in this category — to ensure that every mattress has a high-quality construction. Click here to learn more about our methodology.

What is a luxury mattress?
A luxury mattress is a mattress that consists of many different layers that work harmoniously to enhance your sleep experience. The materials to construct the mattress itself are typically of much higher quality to ensure durability.

Luxury mattresses are going to cost more than standard mattress models. This is because there might be more materials used and/or higher quality materials used to make the bed. This also means that the mattress is likely to last longer and resist sagging.
How much does a luxury mattress cost?
The cost of a luxury mattress varies greatly. It depends on a lot of things, such as the size and materials used. At the time of this writing, the ones listed in this review for a queen size mattress range from $1,874 to $3,195.
What kind of mattress do celebrities use?
It depends on the celebrity. But many of them custom-order mattresses from high-end luxury brands such as Aireloom and Hästens. In 2020, Drake actually spent more than $200,000 on a Hästens mattress made with posh features such as horsehair and gold brass detailing.
