If you’ve been poking around the Internet for a new mattress, chances are you’ve come across Casper and Tuft & Needle, two of the most popular bed-in-a-box brands on the market. While both of these companies make fantastic beds, only one of them can be right for you. So… which is it?
Could it be the Casper original mattress, with its balanced foam approach, gentle Zoned Support, and hearty bounce? Or mayhaps the Tuft & Needle original, a mattress as well-known for its simplicity as for its affordability? Only time (and a quick pass through this comparison) will tell.
So let us be off to figure out which will reign supreme! Continue reading our Casper vs Tuft & Needle mattress comparison to find out.

Tuft & Needle vs Casper: Which is Better for You?
Everyone has different mattress needs depending on their body type and preferred sleeping position. So to help you choose between the Casper and Tuft & Needle, I thought I’d start this comparison off with a brief overview of who should buy which bed. I’d also encourage you to read my full Casper mattress review and Tuft & Needle mattress review for more in-depth information.
Who Should Buy Tuft & Needle

- Back sleepers might enjoy the firm, supportive feel of the Tuft & Needle mattress.
- Hot sleepers might appreciate that the Tuft & Needle sleepers cool, especially for an all-foam mattress.
- Budget shoppers should go with the Tuft & Needle, which is an extremely affordable mattress.
Who Should Buy Casper

- Sleepers who struggle with back pain might appreciate that the Casper is zoned for support. This means it’s softer at the shoulders for pressure relief, but firmer at the lower back for extra support.
- Side sleepers could also like the Casper. Though neither of these beds is particularly soft, the Casper’s zoned foam layer offers some nice pressure relief around the shoulders.
- Combination sleepers might appreciate the responsive feel of the Casper, which makes it easy to change sleeping positions throughout the night.

Tuft & Needle vs Casper: Similarities and Differences
Before we dig into the details on these two mattresses, let’s take a second to reflect on their similarities and differences. Though it may seem like an odd place to start, I actually think taking stock of shared attributes will better amplify the distinct personalities of each bed.
Main Similarities
- Both the Casper and Tuft & Needle mattresses are all-foam mattresses.
- Both beds have a slightly firm feel.
- Neither the Casper nor the Tuft & Needle is supportive enough for heavy people (over 250 lbs). I’d recommend these folks opt for one of our best mattresses for heavy people instead.
Main Differences
- The Casper features Zoned Support that is firmer at the shoulders and softer at the hips.
- The Tuft & Needle mattress is less expensive than the Casper mattress.
- The Tuft & Needle is made of two foam layers, while the Casper is made with three foam layers.
Tuft & Needle and Casper Mattress Feel Comparison
Next up, let’s get into feel. Since feel is such a subjective ol’ thang, I’m going to try my best to capture it with a combo platter of personal experience, outside input, and objective tests.
First, let’s consider firmness. Since every sleeper is going to experience firmness differently (because of body shape, size, and weight), I always like to invite a few of my pals at Sleepopolis HQ to test the bed out along with me. Once we’ve each given it a look, we share our personal firmness ratings with one another, and then average them together for the scores you see below.

Tuft & Needle
Our general thoughts on the Tuft & Needle were that it was a firm mattress. We gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. Personally, I thought it felt even firmer than this, because its two-layer construction made it easier to feel the firm base foam below its top layer.

I also found this mattress responsive and cooling. It was easy for me to move around and change positions on this bed, which is a great sign for combination sleepers. And its open cell Adaptive foam layer helps encourage airflow throughout the bed.
Casper
My testers and I also gave the Casper, an average firmness rating of 7. But I personally found the Casper mattress a bit softer than the Tuft & Needle mattress. The extra layer of memory foam in this bed really helped ease me down onto its firm base, which translated to a softer feel for me.
Like the Tuft & Needle, the Casper is a responsive bed. Its combination of foams helped lift me up and out of the structure. All of this to say, you shouldn’t feel too stuck in the bed, which could be a great thing for combination sleepers who need to move around and change positions in the night.

I’d also add that I felt pretty well supported as I rolled around the bed, which I attribute to the layer of Zoned Support. Even though some positions were more comfortable than others, I think most folks will be able to find a great deal of coziness and pressure relief on this mattress.

Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Tuft & Needle and the Casper
To give you an even better idea of what these online mattresses feel like, I’ve broken down what they feel like in each of the main sleeping positions. Read on to learn more.
Tuft & Needle
Back — I’d recommend this bed for back sleepers who need firm support at the lumbar region for even spinal alignment. I personally felt really comfortable on my back!
Side — While I experienced a lot of fantastic pressure relief on my back and stomach, I can’t say the same thing translated to my side. As I stretched out in this position, I could feel the firm foundation foam pressing uncomfortably against pressure points in my shoulders and hips, typical sensitive spots for side sleepers. For this reason, I’d suggest these sleepers check out the brand’s much softer Tuft & Needle Mint (discussed below).

Stomach — Stomach sleepers will most likely get the support they need from the Tuft & Needle mattress, which offers some nice firm support.
Body Weight — The Tuft & Needle mattress will most likely feel softer to lighter people and firmer to heavier people who sink right through its comfort foam onto its firm support layer. In general, I’d recommend heavier people opt for an innerspring mattress that offers more support.
Casper
Back — The Casper felt great on my back, and offered plenty of gentle support. I’d especially recommend this mattress for anyone who suffers from back pain, as it should help them achieve a healthy spinal alignment.
Side — The Casper felt pretty comfortable on my side thanks to the Zoned Support layer that kept things nice and soft around my shoulders. But if you’re someone looking for a ton of plush sinkage, one of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit for you.

Stomach — The Casper felt just a bit too soft on my stomach. I’d recommend stomach sleepers opt for the Tuft & Needle or choose one of our best mattresses for stomach sleepers instead.
Body Weight — The Casper might feel firmer to lighter people and softer to heavier people. Like the Tuft & Needle, it doesn’t offer quite enough support or durability for plus-sized folks. I’d recommend they stick to a mattress that includes coil support to avoid premature sagging.
Comparing Tuft & Needle and Casper Prices
Pricing is a really important factor when choosing a new mattress. When it comes to price, I think it’s well worth noting that the Tuft & Needle is considerably less expensive than the Casper.
Prices listed are before discount or offer on each size.
Size | Casper | Tuft & Needle |
---|---|---|
Twin | $595 | $645 |
Twin XL | $695 | $695 |
Full | $995 | $795 |
Queen | $1,095 | $895 |

Comparing Tuft & Needle and Casper Mattress Materials
Now that we’ve gone over feel, let’s get into how these mattresses are made! To do that, I’ll be giving a brief synopsis of each bed’s construction.
Tuft & Needle
Cover — The cover of the Tuft & Needle’s mattress cover is made of polyester, a thin material that’s great for breathability and temperature regulation.
Comfort Layer — This layer is made of Tuft and Needle’s proprietary adaptive foam. This foam uses an open-cell design and is infused with graphite to improve its cooling abilities.
Support Layer — Rounding things out is a base layer of high-density poly foam. This section is meant to give the mattress its shape and to help keep the sleeper positioned on top of the bed. A major difference between the Tuft & Needle and Casper mattresses is the absence of a transition layer in the former, so heavier folks might be susceptible to sinking straight through its comfort layer and onto this super firm base.

Casper
Cover — The cover is made of a soft polyester blend. It’s also removable by zipper, so you’ll be able to clean it with the rest of your bedding.
Comfort Layer — Constructed of a latex-like open cell foam, the comfort layer gives the bed some immediate bounce. While this section is quick to respond to pressure, it also allows the sleeper to sink in for some nice pressure relief. Like latex, this proprietary foam is also excellent at cooling, ensuring the bed won’t sleep too hot.
Transition Layer — Below the comfort layer, you’ll find a section of zoned memory foam. This material has a slower response to pressure, so you’ll feel it conforming to your body to offer great pressure relief. And because it’s zoned for support, it will feel firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders. This helps bring some lift to the hips and cushiony relief to the shoulders.
Support Layer — The base of this all-foam bed is made up of heavy-duty poly foam that gives the mattress its structure.

Comparing Tuft & Needle and Casper Customer Service
I like to rate mattress companies’ customer service teams on a scale of Stellar, Great, Satisfactory, and Poor. I find it’s a helpful way to see how easy it would be to make a purchase from each brand.
Tuft & Needle Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Satisfactory: Tuft & Needle’s chat function allows you to search through common FAQ questions to find helpful articles, and includes an option to talk to someone on their team. But, it’s not a live chat feature, which means Tuft & Needle’s customer service team will respond to your question over email within a few hour instead of instantaneously.
Casper Sleepopolis Customer Service Rating
Stellar: I really liked Casper’s easy-to-access live chat feature. I was paired with a person right away and they answered my question quickly and thoroughly.
Comparing Other Models from Tuft & Needle and Casper
As I mentioned up top, the original Casper and Tuft & Needle mattresses aren’t the only models these brands produce. Below, I’ll briefly break down a few of the other beds in each company’s portfolio.
Casper Element

- The Element is Casper’s simplest model, featuring just two layers of foam.
- Without any of the Original’s Zoned Support, the bed has a firmer feel appropriate for back or combo sleepers.
- Pricewise, it’s less expensive than the other Casper mattresses.
- For more, check out my full Casper Element mattress review.
I think this bed is a nice choice for couples (especially those on a budget). It is bouncy and responsive, but also isolates motion quite well, the two things you’ll want to tick off your list if you’re shopping with your partner

- Pretty much the opposite of the Element in every way, the Casper Wave Hybrid is a plush, luxury mattress that uses a combination of foam and coil layers.
- This combination of gentle materials makes it well-suited for those after deep pressure relief, making it one of the best mattresses for side sleepers.
- I’d also say that the Wave Hybrid is Casper’s best option for heavy people.

Tuft & Needle Mint

- The Mint is essentially a souped-up version of the original Tuft & Needle, complete with an added transition layer for a bit more plushness.
- That being said, the bed is much softer than the original, landing at about a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
- For this reason, I’d recommend it for side sleepers.

Our Review Process
Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.
